Beth Gibson Coyle received her Bachelor of Arts in Photojournalism from Texas A&M University in 1982, with additional training at Sam Houston State University in advanced macro photography and color film processing. Her photography won several awards in competitions during her college years.
Beth first worked for the media production shops at Texas A&M and at the UT Health Science Center, and then taught Photography and Journalism at San Antonio Christian Schools from 1988 to 1993.
She has been working with portrait photography since her college days. Since Beth was trained as a journalist, she approaches photography in the same way – recording the subject as it is, capturing that particular moment in time, rather than manipulating the components for art’s sake alone. This approach requires the photographer to be able to compose instantly, having to consider perspective, light and color balance, background and foreground, depth of field, and more... before the moment is lost.
Beth says she finds that when she pushes too hard to make things happen a certain way, she experience a sort of journalistic guilt complex. There is an inherent element of truth in photography, as the image records what actually was happening at that moment.
“We can’t make this stuff up! I have to slow down and wait for the subject to reveal itself, be patient, be constantly on the alert and not worry about what other people are thinking,” she says. “My husband knows what to do when I say “Stop the car!” to get out on the highway and climb a fence, or to apologize to passers-by as I suddenly drop to the sidewalk in the Barcelona rain to get the leaf on Gaudi’s sidewalk…”
Beth is a “Thursday’s Child” who has "Far to Go", meaning she loves to travel and see how others live, so there is much of the world in her art, especially her favorite place... Italy.
Beth has enjoyed exhibiting her art at events such as Fotoseptiembre, the Parade of Artists, the Hill Country Invitational and St. Peter's Art Show .She regularly donates pieces for auction to benefit charitable events.
